Ideally, you should look at your home insurance policy at least annually. More often if you make changes to your account, like purchasing appliances or TV's, buying jewelry, buying a new car, selling one, renovating your home, getting a burglar alarm, or otherwise making any changes to your "norm."

A good time is right before your home insurance renews. Call your PLC insurance agent and check your home insurance to make sure that everything is still set up the way it needs to be.

What should I ask about when I review my home insurance?

  • Make sure that if possible, your home insurance, motorcycle insurance, vacation home insurance, car insurance, business insurance - really, as many kinds of insurance as you need and have - are with the same insurance company. PLC Insurance can save you money by combining your policies with the same insurance company.
  • Check with your PLC agent to make sure you're getting all available discounts.
  • Ask if your home insurance company has made changes to the coverage since you signed up for home insurance.
  • If you don't know about your home insurance deductibles, be sure to learn about them. Also, it is good to not whether your policy includes separate deductibles for certain risks.
  • Depending on how much you can afford to shoulder if something happens, you can usually save money by raising your home insurance deductible. This means that if something happens, you pay more out of pocket before your home insurance kicks in, but you pay a lower home insurance premium.
  • Some items are not covered or have limited coverage on home insurance policies. Make sure to go over the home insurance quote with your agent carefully, and if needed, get an umbrella insurance quote as well (to cover items such as jewelry, furs, art, collectibles, etc.).

If it's been a few years or more (or you've made changes to your home or possessions) since you've had a home insurance review, your finances could be in serious danger. Your home may not be insured to value.

If your property is of higher value now than when you started your home insurance policy and there is a home fire or other accident that requires your home insurance to kick in, you are probably underinsured and not covered.

If you think you might be due for a home insurance review, please contact PLC Insurance immediately. We want to make sure you're protected by your home insurance if something happens. After all, that's the point of having home insurance in the first place, isn't it?
